What is BitLocker?

BitLocker is a full volume encryption feature included in Microsoft Windows since Vista. It's designed to encrypt an entire drive so as to prevent unauthorized access to your private data, as well as to protect your data on that device from changes or malicious uses. You can use BitLocker Drive Encryption to encrypt the internal hard drives of your PC and use BitLocker To Go to encrypt removable storage media, including USB flash drives, external hard drives, SD memory cards and much more.

BitLocker System Requirements

Windows operating systems and editions that support BitLocker Drive Encryption:

  • Windows Vista/7 (Ultimate, Enterprise)
  • Windows 10 (Pro, Enterprise, Edu)
  • Windows 11 (Pro, Enterprise, Edu)
  • Windows 8/8.1 (Pro, Enterprise)
  • Windows Server 2008 and later

To turn on BitLocker encryption in system drives, it requires a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip on your PC's motherboard.

BitLocker Password & BitLocker Recovery Key

The password and 48-digit recovery key are used to unlock BitLocker encrypted drives. If the password failed to unlock the encrypted drive, the recovery key could be your only option.

Each BitLocker partition has its unique recovery key. You can save it to your Microsoft account, a USB flash drive, a file or print it out on a paper.
